Patricia Mahoney is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, class of Minister-Counselor. She was sworn in as Ambassador to the Republic of Benin on January 18, 2019, in Washington, D.C.
Prior to this position, Ambassador Mahoney served as Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary for Southeast Asia in the State Department’s Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs (EAP). She also served in EAP as office director for the Office of Mainland Southeast Asia.
Previously, Ms. Mahoney held senior leadership positions as the Deputy Chief of Mission at the American embassies in Kampala, Uganda, and Kathmandu, Nepal. She has also served as Director of South Asia at the National Security Council, along with other assignments domestically and abroad.
Ambassador Mahoney is a Distinguished Graduate of the National War College where she earned an M.S. degree. She also holds a B.A. cum laude from Harvard University and an M.A from the University of Hawaii. Ms. Mahoney speaks French, Thai, Nepali, and Lao.
